Breath Support Exercises

Observations

Practice a sigh, a long held note, and a song. Do you notice which onset you default to? If necessary, record yourself singing and listen to the types of onset you hear yourself singing. Do you notice what types of onsets your favorite singers tend to use most often, or how they are used - for expression or otherwise?

Discuss your observations below in the comments section.

Breath Support & Semi-Occluded Vocal Tract Exercises

To continue to develop good breath support and long phrasing, we can utilize what is known as the Semi-occluded Vocal Tract Exercise -- or, in other words, we partially block the air passing through our throats.

Here are a couple of demonstrations of how it works - you want to block off some of the air passing through, I used a straw because they are fairly easy to find, but even if you don't have a straw, you can use a lip-trill, the letters [v] or [z]

Below is a video demonstration, then an accompanied recording moving through bubbles, lip trill, [z] and words!
